Sitting with my daughter in the college academic counselor's (AC) office while she tells the AC she wants a career in singing and he quickly shuts her down telling her she needed a job to fall back on. He then says, "For instance, my sister is a nurse. All she does is pass meds and wipe butts." Nurse here. I said, "No we don't!" He looked shocked at first and then said, "Yes they do." I said, "NO...we don't." We left. He's an idiot. In my 24 years as a nurse, I've wore many hats. I assess, manage medical care, observe for signs and symptoms of progress, decline, and impending emergencies, collaborate with physicians, pharmacist, hospitalist, other interdisciplinary teams, and I teach. I administer medication, provide hygiene care, act as counselor, confidant, provider, a hand to hold and so much more. I have saved lives and I have prayed over those who passed. And if wiping a behind is needed, that's what I do for those suffering through some of the worst times of their lives. But it is far from all we do; it is just a small part of what we do...because we care!

Mr. Smith gets around! I think every YT hospital has seen him at least once. From him climbing in the ceiling, to chatting up the ladies of the staff and patients alike, to having abdominal pains and issues that never get addressed….I’m starting to feel bad for Mr. Smith😂

IMO most nurses are angels! A blessing of caregivers for when you're vulnerable and hurt. Thank you very much for caring for others even when they are not being respectful to you. Nothing good? No positives? That’s a shame. I know a young man going into nursing. I wonder if I should tell him some things people will say to him.

I’ve been working corrections for over 3 years now. The first 2.5 years I worked the weekend night shift all by myself on weekends. No other nurses, no doctors, no psych support. I was the only medically trained person in the entire jail. I had around 300 inmates . I did it all, med passes, infirmary, emergency response, managing withdrawal patients, patients on sobering watches, suicide watches, new intakes, etc. my job has horrible leadership and management but my correction staff is amazing and always has my back. Advice to anyone considering corrections…. Do not work for Wellpath. I’ve liked my job but management makes it horrible. Corrections nursing is not for new grads in my opinion. It requires a lot of autonomy and assessment skills . Go develop your clinical skills first. All new nurses should go get acute hospital experience first or else you will stonewall your career.

Nurses are AMAZING humans, 99% percent of the time! (There's always one, usually at 3am, who's probably just over the rude patients, honestly...) Why can't you treat them as you would want to be treated at your job!? What makes people think they can be insulting and mean just because they don't feel well? Smh...these wonderful people are TRYING TO KEEP YOU ALIVE. Basic human decency is the least YOU, as the patient, can do...
